REACH For the Future!
In 2004, REACH for the Future was established in Spokane by three local families who wanted to provide support, both educational and financial, to youngsters facing some of life’s biggest challenges. Formed out of the “I Have A Dream Foundation,” REACH For the Future leaders decided their best use of time and assets was to focus on forming an alliance with certain classrooms and students at a local Title 1 elementary school with limited resources.
In 2008 after a comprehensive search, REACH For the Future selected the second grade classes from Lidgerwood Elementary School to partner with. In its inaugural year, REACH For the Future started out with 46 kids. In order to meet its overall objective and ensure these kids find success in school and life, the REACH program and its advocates will be involved with these same kids for the majority of their academic career, providing resources and support all the way through their second year in college.
To ensure a comprehensive program structure, REACH For the Future’s program manager attends class at Lidgerwood with the students – building a rapport and ultimately learning what they are working on daily. After school, REACH students are asked to faithfully participate in the after school program, held in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Spokane County, at the Northtown Club. With Club scholarships for all and access to a full classroom and additional amenities, this location gives REACH the perfect spot to conduct its various programs, such as Reading with volunteers, Science in Action and GetLit, a writing program.
The benefit of this program extends well beyond the actual classroom and into critical financial support as well. Through participation in the GET (Guarantee Education Tuition) Program, REACH For the Future is currently buying educational “units” which translates to thousands of dollars for each student when he/she graduates from high school and starts attending college. As an incentive for program loyalty and success, REACH For the Future will generously provide a substantial financial aid packet to each member and pay it directly to his/her college choice.
Our mission is to motivate and empower children from low income neighborhoods in Spokane County to reach their education and career goals by providing a long term program of tutoring, mentoring and enrichment and tuition assistance for higher education.
