“There is a high school dropout epidemic in America. Each year, almost one-third of all public high school students – and nearly one half of all black, Hispanic and Native Americans – fail to graduate from public high schools with their class. Many of these students abandon school with less than two years to complete their high school education.”
These are the words of John Bridgeland, who in his 2006 publication of The Silent Epidemic, noted that today the U.S. is the only industrialized country in the world where young people are less likely than their parents to earn a high school diploma. Mr. Bridgeland went on to note that those most affected by this epidemic are minority youth, students from single parent homes, and youth living in poverty; of whom only 40 percent graduate from high school.
